What is Sound Scene?
It's an annual interactive audio installation curated by DC Listening Lounge and presented at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Now preparing for its I1th year, Sound Scene showcases the audio creativity of the District of Columbia (as well as national and international artists). The one-day-only "sonic happening" features many and multiform listening opportunities-- but not just with your ears. Deaf audiences enthusiastically welcome.
Highlights from over the years:
- Listen to original compositions scored for your ankles, wrists and torsos with wearable technology from Music Not Impossible
- Build (and keep) wind chimes from recycled materials
- Sculpt sound waves through sand with the sound of your voice
- Direct a "Choose your own (audio) adventure" story
- Send messages through an audio periscope
- Play a veggie keyboard
- Compose melodies based upon body temperature
- Enjoy live performances from National Symphony Orchestra musicians, Takoma Park's PanLara steel drum band and local improvisational musicians including Layne Garrett and Nate Scheible.
- ASL interpreters on-site all day
- Sign up for a workshop: join an instrument build, kids’ audio postcard workshop, or small group listening lounge – held throughout the day
- Strike a Peace Bell made from a reclaimed melted down gun
- Relax in a quiet corner, pick up some headphones and allow our audio art and stories to transport you. Take a few minutes to listen more closely to the stories of our city.
July 7, 2018, IOam-5pm.
Sound Scene Roots

From there, its expanded to venues across the city including The Warehouse (RIP), The Goethe Institut (DC) and now the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Learn more on our about page.
