Audio Postcard- 10am, 12pm, 3pm (25 minutes)
Children and adults in attendance will collaborate with two musicians and a facilitator in the creation of an "audio postcard" inspired by a selection of sculptures in the museum’s sculpture garden. Spots are limited so sign up here (or at the front Sound Scene welcome desk). Once you receive your confirmation please meet at "The Drummer" located at the east Jefferson Street entrance of the Hirshhorn 10 minutes before your workshop is slated to begin. If you have questions, please ask at the front "Sound Scene welcome desk" inside on the ground level. Each collaborative session lasts approximately 15 minutes. Audio postcards will be available for visitors to hear later in the day. Stay after the performances for a short demonstration on creating your own audio postcard. A limited number of mini recording devices will be distributed during each session on a first-come, fist-serve basis.
Deb Edattel left Texas for DC in 2005 with an English degree and a lot of nervous energy. Her interests include listening to podcasts, interviewing her neighbors and friends for various audio projects, promoting celebrity gossip as the perfect lens for understanding social culture, and calling attention to Oxford commas. A mom of three, she has a soft spot for muddy feet, improvising answers to the question ‘Why?’ and kids podcasts; she aspires to create her own kid-friendly podcast soon.
Simone Baron, a fearless and charismatic presence, has performed internationally throughout Europe, Israel, and North America. While finishing her formal studies in piano and conducting, she fell in love with the accordion. Her reimagination of the accordion’s possibilities are showcased in Arco Belo, her hybrid chamber jazz ensemble with strings and percussion that features original compositions and arrangements.
Tristan Bannon is a Washington DC native and lover of music, arts, and museums. A father of two boys, his interests include making up kids songs, backpacking, and low impact softball. This is his first improvised, sculpture-inspired, interactive music event, but hopefully not his last.

Instrument Build- 11am (25 minutes)
Join musician-artist Layne Garett for a workshop where participants get to build a simple musical instrument, a soda-straw oboe. Space is limited so sign up here (or at the front Sound Scene welcome desk). During the workshop, participants will build their instrument and then conduct a series of experiments in creating aleatoric dissonance, using their oboes as well as their voices. A goal will be to use dissonance to aid in facilitating a range of aesthetic responses, including positive ones.
This workshop is all-ages friendly. The meeting place for the workshop will be outdoors in the Plaza and indicated in the Hirshhorn Museum lobby. As always attendees can ask for additional information at the museum's check-in desk.
Layne Garrett is an improvising musician and instrument builder based in Takoma Park, MD. He works with prepared guitars, found objects, and self-built instruments. He plays in the improvising duo Weed Tree with drummer Amanda Huron, as well as in regular and irregular collaborations with a spectrum of players from across the DC and Baltimore sound universe. He is an active promoter of the musical culture, hosting house shows for the past decade and recently as a founding member and curator for Rhizome DC. He leads instrument building and sound exploration workshops and camps for kids at various educational institutions around town. He has traveled to play at events like High Zero in Baltimore, XFest in Massachusetts, Voice of the Valley Noise Rally in West Virginia, H-O-T Series of Improvised Music and Dance in Philadelphia, and Frantasia Festival of Out Music and Arts in Maine. questionthetruth.com/noise
